There is an easy answer to the question. They are exactly the same thing! The acronym SEO stands for search engine optimization and whether you are applying it to a blog or a website the techniques and the required results are exactly the same.
So what exactly is Search Engine Optimization or SEO? The overriding objective of SEO is to try and get more visitors to your website or blog and this is done by improving different aspects of your site or blog, so that the position of your website in the results pages of a search engine, such as Google, is as near to the top of the list as possible
The obvious ultimate position on Google’s SERPs (search engine results pages) is the number 1 position in Google, which is the website listed at the top of the page on page one of Google. The reason for this is that site listed at number one will get more click throughs, and therefore visitors from the search engines, than any of the other lower positions and the difference is dramatic. So, always aim for position one!
So if you really want to make money on the internet with you blog and you don’t want to use pay-per-click to get visitor traffic to your site then you will need to use SEO and get traffic from the search engines. But to get the visitors you need, the search engine optimization you do needs to be effective.
Generally speaking, search engine optimization is all about keywords or keyword phrases. The importance of these keywords is critical in three different areas of SEO.
- Keywords Typed By A User Into A Search Engine When Looking For Information
- Keywords On Your Blog and Blog Posts or Web Sites and Web Pages
- Keywords In Links From Other Websites or Blogs Pointing To Your Blog Or Website
So how do all these keywords work together and how does search engine optimization use these keywords? Actually a better question would be to ask how the search engines use these keywords to rank your website.
First of all please understand that Google ranks web pages and not just websites. And also understand that the major factor a search engine, such as Google, uses to rank sites and web pages in the results pages is the number and quality of the links from other sites pointing to your site and the keywords that are used in the anchor text of these links.
If you focus on the two sentences in the previous paragraph then you already know how the most important part of search engine optimization works. It also shows you a very good idea of what you need to do to get your own site or blog ranked in the search engines.
So now you need to know how Google works and this is it. When a user types in a search term into a Google.com and then clicks on the search button, Google will try and match a web site page, which could be a home page, to the search phrase just entered.
And it does this by taking keywords from the search term and matching them to both the keywords on the web page and keywords in the links to that page from other sites. From all the sites it has listed for those keywords Google will sort them by relevance and display them on the search engine results pages, with the most relevant site or page in position one.
From this it should be obvious that the secret to getting that number one spot is in creating a site or page that has the right keywords on it as well as the right keywords pointing to it. The difficult part is in making sure that the keywords pointing to your site or blog are the most relevant and have the most authority. And it is the authority of those links, which is often the key aspect of search engine optimization, and it will determine whether your website or blog gets to number one!
