$10 //hr for a website.?
I got an offer from a company to do a website for them. They want database driven php, about 200 or less pages of content, Flash animation and menus, javascript dropdowns, CSS, and SEO. They are willing to pay me $10 /hr and $1000 once the website is done. I don’t have a degree in web design, but I’ve been designing websites for about 5 years. This sounds like a great job offer, and I was wondering if I should offer them more for the website for the price or tell them they are paying me way too much. Thanks!
I don’t do much freelance anymore, but even when I do…I charge this:
$35 per hour design (although I usually outsource, at that rate)
$50 per hour programming (this includes all Javascript)
$20 per hour content
Maintenance at $20 per hour, new features billed at previous rates.
One of my degrees is in design, but this doesn’t make me a great designer by any means. I know a lot of designers without degrees who make a lot prettier sites than I do (I’m a programmer by trade).
Here’s the other thing: I wouldn’t take that job as a freelancer for any amount of cash. The requirements of that job suggest a team needs to be employed. I would laugh in their face if they suggested $10 per hour, this kind of site would be a bargain at 10 grand.
If you take this on by yourself, you’d better be a rockstar, or you will not be able to keep up with it….even full time, this job could take you six months to get it halfway together. And if you are a rockstar, you’d do well to turn it down unless you’re planning on calling the missing 5-7 grand a charitable donation on your taxes.
