I’ve heard that an invalid page is less SEO-friendly than a valid one. Is this true?

Not exactly…not anymore, at least. Search engine algorithms have become very sophisticated, and they will index your page, even if it is full of mangled syntax.
Matt Cutts (Google Gadgets guy) addressed this issue a few times, actually, and said that he’s read studies that state that some 40% of all pages have HTML syntax errors. No decent search engine could pass over that kind of content and call itself reputable.
Still, it’s always a great idea to validate your page. Properly formed HTML can give you a few more instances to place content for Google and Yahoo to read (such as alt attributes). It won’t make or break your site though. You will need genuine content to get a solid pagerank.
